Learning Objectives

Children will be able to identify and draw at least one member of their family.

Children will be able to state one activity their family enjoys doing together.

Children will participate in a Q&A session about their families, sharing simple facts.

Children will be able to glue and arrange pictures and words to create a page for their "All About Me" book.

Step-By-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle for a read-aloud of a book about different kinds of families. Discuss how families are special and unique, just like each child.

2. Introduce the "All About Me" book project. Explain that they will create pages about themselves and their families to add to their personal books.

3. Show children the pre-printed sentence strips and discuss their meanings. Encourage them to think about their own families and how they might complete the sentences.

4. Provide each child with sugar paper. Invite them to draw a picture of their family or a family member. They can also choose a photograph of their family to glue onto the paper.

5. As they work, ask guiding questions: "Who is in your family?", "What do you like to do with your family at home?".

6. Once the drawings/photos are complete, help children select a sentence strip that fits their picture and glue it onto their page. They can also add stickers.

7. Facilitate a gentle Q&A where children can share their page with a small group or the whole class, explaining who they drew and what their family likes to do.

8. Assemble the pages into their "All About Me" books.

Educator Tip

Ensure photographs represent diverse family structures and encourage children to include all members they wish to represent. For children who are hesitant to share, allow them to draw or point to family members in a photo. Safety note: Supervise scissor use closely and ensure glue sticks are handled appropriately.

Assessment

Observe children's engagement in drawing and discussion. Note their ability to identify family members and state a family activity. Collect the completed book pages to review their ability to combine drawings/photos with text and stickers, reflecting their understanding of their family.

Educator tip

Require complete thoughts; photograph work for portfolios.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Anecdotal notes + product check.
