Instructions
Choose a familiar story ('We're Going on a Bear Hunt' works perfectly) and create a physical trail. Page 1 at the entrance, page 2 by the bushes, page 3 at the mud kitchen...
At each station, place a prop: long wavy grass (strips of green fabric), deep cold river (water tray), thick oozy mud (mud kitchen), big dark forest (under the climbing frame).
Guide children along the trail: 'Let's read the story! Here's the first page... We're going on a bear hunt! Let's walk to the next part...' The physical journey mirrors the narrative journey.
At each station, read the page and interact with the prop: 'Squelch squerch! We need to go THROUGH the mud!' Children step in the mud kitchen. Text + physical experience = deep comprehension.
At the end of the trail, the 'bear' (a teddy hidden under a blanket) is discovered. 'A BEAR! Quick, back through the mud... back through the river...' Children run back along the trail.
Repeat on multiple days. Children will begin to navigate the trail independently, 'reading' the story from memory as they move through it. This is self-directed reading behaviour.
