Handwriting: Pre-Writing Patterns
To develop the motor patterns needed for letter formation through structured pre-writing practice.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Literacy
- Learning area: Literacy
- Level: EYFS 3-4
Objectives
- Forms circles with increasing control
- Draws straight lines
- Copies zigzag and wave patterns
- Shows consistent hand preference
Materials
- Pre-writing pattern worksheets
- Whiteboards and pens
- Sand trays
- Paint and large brushes
Instructions
Teach four core patterns: vertical lines (l, t, i), horizontal lines (e, f), circles (o, a, c, d), and diagonal lines (v, w, z). Every letter is made from combinations of these patterns.
Start BIG — full arm movements in the air. 'Let's make circles! Big circles with our whole arm! Round and round!' Then medium (whiteboard), then small (paper).
Use sand trays: 'Draw circles in the sand. Round and round. Now straight lines. Up, down. Up, down.' Sand provides resistance and sensory feedback that paper doesn't.
Make patterns meaningful: 'These zigzags are mountains! And these circles are the sun! And these wavy lines are the sea!' Patterns embedded in pictures are more motivating than drill.
Assess handedness by observing which hand children naturally use. By 3-4, most children show a clear preference. Support it but don't force it.
Practice daily for five minutes. Like phonics, consistency matters more than duration. A child who practises patterns daily will develop motor automaticity for letter writing.
