Instructions
Before reading, identify two or three 'star words' — rich vocabulary that will appear in the text. 'Today's star words are 'enormous', 'trembling', and 'feast'. Listen for them!'
When a star word appears in the text, pause: ''Enormous' — that means REALLY, REALLY big! Even bigger than big! The giant was enormous — as big as a house!'
Use the word in multiple contexts: 'The giant was enormous. My dinner was enormous. Can you use 'enormous' in a sentence? An enormous... what?'
Add star words to a 'Word Collector' jar or wall display. 'We're collecting wonderful words! Let's add 'enormous' to our collection.' Review collected words regularly.
Encourage children to spot star words in other contexts: 'We learned 'enormous' from our book — has anyone heard it anywhere else?' Transfer across contexts deepens understanding.
Research shows that vocabulary at age 5 is the strongest predictor of later reading comprehension. Explicit vocabulary teaching is one of the most impactful things you can do.
