For babies under three months, high-contrast black and white images are significantly easier to focus on than coloured pictures. Provide a selection of dedicated high-contrast board books.

Hold the book steady about 25cm from the baby's face. Watch their eyes — you'll see them tracking the bold patterns. 'You can see it! You're looking at the stripes!'

Name what they're looking at simply: 'Circle. Big circle. And a little circle inside.' You're providing vocabulary even though the baby cannot yet respond verbally.

Include a baby-safe mirror book in the collection. Babies are fascinated by faces — the mirror provides the most engaging 'illustration' possible.

As babies grow (4-8 months), gradually introduce books with bold colour alongside the high-contrast collection. The transition from monochrome to colour happens naturally as visual acuity develops.

Display books with covers facing outward on a low shelf — even pre-mobile babies can see and reach for them. This environmental design communicates that books are valued objects.
