Blending is essential for reading fluency.

Materials

• Butterfly cutouts with sounds
• CVC word cards
• Sound boxes

Instructions

Each butterfly wing has a sound. Fly them together: /c/-/a/-/t/ = cat!

Educator tip

Start slow, then speed up the blending.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe blending ability and word recognition.
