- Associate letter sounds with health and safety vocabulary, such as H for handwashing or S for safety.

- Demonstrate fine motor control through cutting and pasting images.

- Organise information into a sequential book format.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and display a few health-themed items, such as a toothbrush or a bandage.

2. Ask the children to identify the starting sound of each item and write the corresponding letter on a whiteboard.

3. Distribute the cardstock pages to each child, assigning a specific letter to each student based on their current progress.

4. Instruct the children to look through the magazines to find pictures that start with their assigned letter and relate to health or safety.

5. Demonstrate how to carefully cut out the images and glue them onto the cardstock page.

6. Assist children in writing the name of the object under the image using the provided labels or by sounding out the words together.

7. Encourage children to decorate the borders of their pages using markers to reinforce letter recognition.

8. Collect the finished pages and punch holes in the sides to bind them into a class Health and Safety Letter Book.

9. Invite each child to present their page to the group, identifying the letter and the health concept they chose.

Educator Tip

If a child struggles to find images, provide a prepared bin of pre-cut health-related pictures to maintain their focus. To extend the activity for advanced learners, ask them to write a full sentence about their chosen health habit at the bottom of their page.

Assessment

- Observe if the child correctly matches the initial letter sound to the image they selected.

- Note the child's ability to use scissors and glue with appropriate control.

- Record whether the child can verbally explain the connection between their picture and the theme of health or safety.

Require complete thoughts (sentence frames); rotate roles in pairs; photograph work for portfolios.
