Getting Ready for the Tooth Fairy
Toddlers internalize routines through repetition and movement. 'Getting Ready for the Tooth Fairy' supports emerging independence and safety awareness.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Health, Safety and Hygiene
- Learning area: Communication and Language
- Level: EYFS 2-3
Objectives
- Identify body parts
- Imitate hygiene routines
- Follow 1-step safety directions
Instructions
Materials
- A sturdy board book about teeth or visiting the dentist.
- A large plastic model of a set of teeth.
- A soft, child-sized toothbrush.
- A small basket or pouch to represent the tooth fairy bag.
- A mirror mounted at the child's eye level.
Learning Objectives
- Point to or identify teeth on a model or in a mirror.
- Mimic the brushing motion with a toothbrush.
- Follow simple verbal directions during a short group activity.
- Demonstrate interest in a story by looking at pictures.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a comfortable, quiet area to minimize distractions.
2. Introduce the board book by pointing to the illustrations of smiling faces and teeth.
3. Read the story aloud using a calm voice, pausing frequently to allow children to look at the images.
4. Show the children the plastic model of the teeth and let them touch the surface to explore the texture.
5. Demonstrate how to hold the toothbrush and move it in a gentle circular motion on the model.
6. Invite each child to hold the brush and attempt to mimic your brushing motion on the model.
7. Move to the mirror and encourage children to open their mouths so they can see their own teeth.
8. Introduce the small pouch and explain that it is for keeping teeth safe for the tooth fairy.
9. Place the model teeth into the pouch to demonstrate the concept of keeping a tooth safe.
10. Conclude the activity by praising the children for their participation and interest.
Educator Tip
Toddlers have very short attention spans, so keep the reading portion under three minutes. If a child becomes restless, allow them to explore the toothbrush or mirror independently while you continue the activity with the rest of the group.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can point to their own mouth or teeth when asked.
- Note if the child attempts to imitate the brushing motion on the model.
- Document if the child maintains focus on the book for at least two minutes.
Educator tip
Use choice questions; keep groups small; accept approximations; keep transitions fast.
Assessment
Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Observe imitation, participation, simple labelling.
