Counting Teeth
Infants build early awareness of body and routine through repetition and sensory input. 'Counting Teeth' lays groundwork for future health habits.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Health, Safety and Hygiene
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS Birth-2
Objectives
- Respond to caregiver voice
- Visually track body images
- Explore textures
- Begin associating routines with safety and hygiene
Instructions
Materials
- Large, soft-sided mirror mounted at floor level.
- A clean, soft silicone finger toothbrush.
- A set of large, high-contrast photos showing smiling faces.
- A soft puppet with a large, visible mouth.
- A small basket for storing materials.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate interest in looking at their own reflection.
- Respond to the teacher's voice during counting sequences.
- Track the movement of the puppet or finger toothbrush with their eyes.
- Engage in sensory exploration of their own mouth area.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Place the infant on a soft mat in front of the floor mirror.
2. Sit behind the infant and hold the puppet so it is visible in the mirror.
3. Use the puppet to point to its own mouth and make a gentle, rhythmic sound.
4. Gently touch the infant's cheek near the mouth to draw their attention to the area.
5. Use the silicone finger toothbrush to lightly touch the infant's gums or emerging teeth while speaking in a calm, melodic tone.
6. Count aloud as you touch each area of the mouth, saying one, two, three.
7. Show the infant the high-contrast photos of smiling faces to reinforce the concept of teeth and mouths.
8. Allow the infant to grasp the soft puppet or the silicone brush to explore the texture with their hands.
9. Keep the interaction brief, ending the activity when the infant loses interest or becomes fussy.
Educator Tip
Infants learn through sensory repetition and the sound of a familiar voice. If an infant is teething, they may be sensitive to touch, so observe their cues closely and prioritize comfort over the counting sequence. You can extend this activity by singing a simple song about teeth during routine nappy changes.
Assessment
- Observe if the infant tracks the movement of the puppet or the teacher's finger toward their mouth.
- Note if the infant reaches out to touch the mirror or the teacher's hand.
- Record whether the infant exhibits a positive response to the rhythmic counting voice.
Educator tip
Keep stimulation low; follow infant cues; sanitize props; avoid small parts.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gaze, sensory response, and regulation.
