- Pre-cut red sugar paper hat shapes with a front shield area
- Washable yellow paint and thick foam brushes
- Pre-cut yellow paper badges or star shapes
- Glue sticks
- Black crayons or markers
- Child-safe scissors for the teacher
Learning Objectives
- Identify the firefighter as a community helper who keeps people safe.
- Demonstrate fine motor control by applying paint and glue to specific areas.
- Engage in a group discussion about fire safety and emergency helpers.
- Follow multi-step directions to complete a creative project.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and show a picture of a firefighter wearing a helmet.
2. Discuss the role of a firefighter, focusing on how they help our community stay safe.
3. Demonstrate how to hold the foam brush to paint the red hat shape with yellow accents.
4. Distribute the pre-cut red hat shapes and the yellow paint to each child at their workspace.
5. Allow the children to paint their hats, encouraging them to use the yellow paint to create stripes or patterns.
6. While the paint dries, talk about the colour of fire trucks and the sound of a siren.
7. Once the paint is dry, assist the children in gluing the yellow badge or star onto the front of the hat.
8. Use the black marker to write each child's name on the inside of their hat.
9. Help the children staple or tape the sides of the hat together to fit their heads.
10. Invite the children to wear their hats and practise walking safely like a firefighter.
Educator Tip
If a child struggles with the painting process, provide a stencil or painter's tape to create clean lines. This activity can be extended by setting up a dramatic play area with a toy fire truck and costumes to reinforce the concept of community service.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can verbally name the firefighter when shown the completed hat.
- Note the child's ability to manipulate the glue stick and brush with increasing precision.
- Record whether the child follows the sequence of painting, drying, and assembling the hat.
Educator tip
Pre-cut difficult pieces; use visual schedule; model health vocabulary.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: engagement, comprehension, correct task attempt.
