Community Helpers & Firefighter Hat Art
Level 3 promotes critical thinking and personal responsibility. 'Community Helpers & Firefighter Hat Art' strengthens reasoning about health and safety decisions.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Health, Safety and Hygiene
- Learning area: Understanding the World
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Analyse health decisions
- Justify reasoning
- Extend with writing or data tracking
Instructions
Materials
- Red sugar paper or cardstock templates pre-cut into hat shapes
- Yellow sugar paper for badge cutouts
- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors
- Black markers or crayons
- Stickers or foam shapes for decoration
- A picture book about fire safety or community helpers
Learning Objectives
- Identify the role of a firefighter as a community helper who maintains safety.
- Demonstrate fine motor control by cutting along simple lines and assembling paper pieces.
- Explain one way a firefighter helps the community during an emergency.
- Practise following multi-step directions to complete a creative project.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and read a short story about community helpers, focusing specifically on the duties of firefighters.
2. Facilitate a brief group discussion asking children to identify tools a firefighter uses, such as hoses, ladders, or helmets.
3. Distribute the pre-cut red hat templates and yellow badge shapes to each student at their tables.
4. Demonstrate how to use scissors to trim the edges of the hat if necessary, emphasizing safety and hand placement.
5. Instruct the children to glue the yellow badge onto the front centre of their red hat.
6. Encourage students to use markers to draw symbols or write their names on the badge to personalize their gear.
7. Allow students to decorate the remaining space on the hat using stickers or foam shapes.
8. Assist students in measuring the hat to their head size and stapling the band to fit securely.
9. Invite the children to wear their hats while they role-play a simple fire safety drill or a community helper scenario.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for students who struggle with fine motor tasks, provide pre-cut shapes that require only assembly rather than cutting. If a student finishes early, encourage them to draw a picture of a fire truck or a fire station on the back of their hat to extend the learning.
Assessment
- Observe the student's ability to correctly identify the firefighter as a community helper during the group discussion.
- Monitor the student's independence and precision while using scissors and glue to assemble the hat.
- Note the student's verbal explanation of why firefighters are important to the safety of the community.
Educator tip
Use simple rubric; insist on justification; allow multiple correct solutions; support with exemplars/word banks.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, clarity, independence.
