Community Helpers & Firefighter Hat Art

Level 2 strengthens application and explanation. 'Community Helpers & Firefighter Hat Art' deepens understanding of health responsibility.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Pre-cut red cardstock firefighter hat templates with adjustable headbands

- Red and yellow sugar paper scraps for collage

- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors

- Yellow markers or crayons

- Printed images of community helpers and fire safety gear

- Stapler for final assembly

Learning Objectives

- Identify the role of a firefighter in maintaining community safety.

- Demonstrate fine motor control by cutting and gluing paper shapes.

- Explain at least one way firefighters help people during an emergency.

- Follow multi-step directions to complete a creative project.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and display images of community helpers. Ask students to identify what a firefighter wears to stay safe.

2. Discuss the importance of fire safety, such as having an escape plan or knowing who to call in an emergency.

3. Distribute the pre-cut hat templates and explain that each child will decorate their own badge area.

4. Provide the red and yellow paper scraps. Encourage children to cut these into small squares or triangles to create a flame or badge design on the front of the hat.

5. Model how to apply glue sparingly to the back of the paper scraps and press them firmly onto the hat template.

6. Allow students to use yellow markers to draw additional details, such as a shield or a number, on their hats.

7. Assist students in measuring the headband to fit their heads and use a stapler to secure the band at the correct size.

8. Invite students to put on their hats and role-play a scenario where they help a neighbor or practise a fire drill.

Educator Tip

To differentiate for children who struggle with scissor skills, provide pre-cut shapes so they can focus entirely on the design and composition. If a student finishes quickly, encourage them to draw a picture of a fire truck on the back of their hat to extend the narrative play.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can correctly name the firefighter as a community helper.

- Record the child's ability to use scissors to cut paper into smaller pieces.

- Note whether the child can explain the function of the hat during the role-play portion of the lesson.

Educator tip

Require complete thoughts (sentence frames); rotate roles in pairs; photograph work for portfolios.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe reasoning, independence, collaboration.
