Instructions
Gather children and build excitement: 'Today we're going to dance with friends and beautiful scarves! When we dance with a partner, we have to pay attention to each other and move together!'
Distribute colorful scarves and give children time to explore them individually: swirling, tossing, catching, trailing behind as they run. This individual exploration prepares them for partner work.
Partner children and give each pair one or two scarves to share. Play flowing music and call out partner movements: 'Wave your scarf together up high! Now swirl it around in a circle together! Hold both ends and swing it between you!'
Model with a volunteer how partners can create movements together—tossing a scarf between them, wrapping it around both bodies, or holding opposite ends while spinning.
Incorporate 'freeze dance' elements: when music stops, partners freeze together in a pose with their scarf. This adds excitement while practicing body control.
Switch partners several times so children experience different movement styles. Close with a final free-dance session where partners choose their favourite movements.
Educator tip
Use freeze cues throughout to reset attention and give struggling partnerships a moment to regroup. Some children may need adult partnering initially before being ready for peer partnerships.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Monitor coordination quality, partner interaction, ability to follow movement instructions, and rhythmic response to music.
