Instructions
Introduce the role of Appreciation Ambassador: 'An ambassador is someone who represents their country and builds friendships with other countries. An Appreciation Ambassador builds friendships by noticing and sharing appreciation!'
Teach specific appreciation: 'Instead of just saying 'thanks,' Appreciation Ambassadors say exactly WHAT they're thankful for and WHY it mattered. Compare: 'Thanks for helping' vs. 'Thank you for helping me pick up the blocks. It made me feel like someone cared, and we got it done faster!'
Practise the formula: WHO + WHAT they did + HOW it helped/made you feel. Write sample appreciations together.
Establish an Appreciation Ambassador system: each week, several children serve as ambassadors with special attention to noticing and writing appreciations. They deliver notes formally, reading them aloud if the recipient agrees.
Create an appreciation mailbox where anyone can drop appreciation notes anytime. Read appreciations aloud during community circle.
Extend to school-wide appreciation: write notes to school staff, other teachers, administrators. Discuss how unexpected appreciation makes people feel valued.
Educator tip
Model appreciation regularly: 'I want to appreciate Marcus for waiting so patiently while I helped Sarah. It made me feel calm instead of rushed!' Children learn specific appreciation from hearing it.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Evaluate specificity of appreciations, connection between action and impact, and effectiveness of appreciation delivery.
