Instructions
Introduce integrity with a compelling definition: 'Integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. It's when your character is the same whether the teacher is looking or not!'
Explore examples: 'Putting your dishes away at home even though Mum didn't remind you—that's integrity. Picking up rubbish on the playground even though no one asked—that's integrity. Not cheating on a game even though no one would know—that's integrity.'
Discuss why integrity matters: 'When you have integrity, YOU know you did the right thing. You feel proud of yourself. You become someone you can trust!'
Introduce 'Secret Integrity Missions': children receive secret tasks to complete without recognition—cleaning up when no one's watching, being kind without wanting praise, following rules when the teacher steps out. They report back privately.
Create integrity journals where children record integrity moments: 'Today I had integrity when...' Share these in trusted circles.
When integrity lapses occur, discuss without shame: 'It's hard to have integrity all the time. What can you try next time?'
Educator tip
Create genuine opportunities for integrity by stepping away occasionally and trusting children with responsibility. Then process: 'What happened while I was gone? Anyone have integrity moments to share?'
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe understanding of integrity concept, participation in secret missions, and integrity in real (unobserved) situations.
