Ten Little Pumpkins

Interactive felt board stories make abstract number concepts tangible. When children see and manipulate felt pieces while counting, they develop strong one-to-one correspondence and early subtraction understanding. The playful narrative with various characters taking pumpkins creates engagement while teaching mathematical thinking.

Instructions

Set up your felt board with all ten pumpkin shapes arranged in a row. Have character pieces hidden nearby for dramatic reveals. Gather children where everyone can see the board.

Introduce the story with enthusiasm: "Ten little pumpkins were sitting on a fence, waiting for the Halloween parade to begin. But one by one, characters came by and took pumpkins for their own celebrations!"

Begin the interactive chant, removing one pumpkin as each character appears:

"Ten little pumpkins sitting on a fence,

Along came a black cat, and then there were... (pause for children to respond) ...nine!

Nine little pumpkins staying out late,

A pirate took one, then there were... eight!

Eight little pumpkins looking up at heaven,

A dinosaur took one, then there were... seven!

Seven little pumpkins doing silly tricks,

A ghost took one, then there were... six!"

Continue the pattern through the numbers, inviting children to count remaining pumpkins after each removal. Use varied characters that appeal to your particular group.

When you reach zero, ask: "How many pumpkins are left on our fence?" Introduce the concept of zero as "none" or "no more."

Invite children to retell the story with different characters, manipulating the felt pieces themselves.

Educator tip

Have individual children take turns removing pumpkins and adding character pieces. This active participation increases engagement and provides hands-on experience with the mathematical concepts.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe counting accuracy, understanding of subtraction as removal, one-to-one correspondence, and number recognition.
