Autumn Leaves Coming to Life

Autumn is one of the most visually dramatic seasons for exploring nature. When children examine real leaves closely, they develop scientific observation skills while building vocabulary for describing what they see. The collage activity extends observation into creative expression, making the learning visible and lasting.

Instructions

Begin with a nature collection experience, either from a classroom nature walk or by providing a pre-gathered basket of diverse fall leaves. Give children time to explore the collection freely, picking up leaves, comparing sizes, and examining colours.

Distribute magnifying glasses and invite children to look closely at leaf details. Guide their observations: "What do you notice about the lines on your leaf?" "Feel the edges. Are they smooth or bumpy?" "How many points does your leaf have?"

Introduce descriptive vocabulary: veins, stem, edge, pointed, smooth, crinkled, spotted. Ask children to find leaves that match each descriptor.

Transition to the collage activity. Explain that children will create their own fall picture using the leaves they have examined. Demonstrate gluing a leaf onto cardstock, then adding drawn details to bring the leaf to life. Perhaps your leaf becomes a face with drawn eyes and a smile, or the body of a butterfly with drawn wings.

Give children freedom to create their own interpretations. Some may create realistic fall scenes while others transform leaves into fantastical creatures. Both approaches demonstrate learning and should be celebrated.

Conduct a gallery walk where children share their creations and explain their observations and creative choices.

Educator tip

Press some leaves between heavy books for a week before using. Pressed leaves are flatter and easier to glue. Fresh leaves add texture but may curl as they dry.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe scientific vocabulary use, careful observation skills, ability to describe leaf characteristics, and creative expression in final products.
