Seasonal Technology Exploration

In today's world, technology literacy is as essential as paper and crayons. When children use technology purposefully for learning, they develop skills they will use throughout their education. Connecting technology use to fall themes ensures that screen time extends classroom learning rather than replacing it.

Instructions

Before the session, bookmark or prepare fall-themed educational resources appropriate for your children's ages. Options might include virtual pumpkin patch tours, leaf identification games, weather tracking websites, or interactive fall stories.

Gather children and review technology expectations using visual cues: gentle touches, staying on approved sites, taking turns, and wearing headphones to avoid disturbing others. These routines should be consistent every time technology is used.

Introduce the day's digital exploration: "Today we're using technology to learn more about fall! You might visit a virtual pumpkin patch, play a leaf matching game, or watch a video about animals getting ready for winter."

Demonstrate navigation to one or two options, showing children how to access the resources. Pair children at devices when possible, as social technology use promotes communication and collaboration.

Circulate during technology time, engaging children in conversation about their discoveries: "What are you learning? Tell me about what you see." This ensures technology remains an interactive learning experience rather than passive consumption.

End with a sharing time where children describe something they learned or discovered during their digital exploration.

Educator tip

Limit technology sessions to 15 to 20 minutes for young children. The goal is purposeful use, not extended screen time. Always connect digital experiences to hands-on follow-up activities.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observe technology skills including mouse control or touch navigation, ability to follow technology expectations, and learning that transfers from digital exploration.
