Soccer Field Measurement (Farm Maths)
Supports agricultural awareness, STEM integration, literacy, and social-emotional development at the Infant stage.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS At the Farm
- Learning area: Mathematics
- Level: EYFS Birth-2
Objectives
- Developmentally appropriate objectives aligned to Infant for Soccer Field Measurement (Farm Maths).
Materials
- Level-appropriate farm-themed materials and manipulatives.
Instructions
Materials
- Soft, fabric-covered foam soccer ball
- Large, green felt mat or soft rug to represent the field
- Four small farm animal figurines made of soft silicone or wood
- Masking tape to mark boundaries
- A shallow basket for storage
- Soft floor cushions for support
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate tracking of a moving object with eyes.
- Engage in tactile exploration of different textures.
- Respond to simple spatial language such as near or far.
- Develop core strength through supported reaching and tummy time.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Clear a safe, carpeted area and lay down the green felt mat to designate the soccer field.
2. Use masking tape to create a simple border around the mat to define the play space.
3. Place the infant on their tummy or back in the centre of the mat, ensuring they are comfortable and supported by cushions if needed.
4. Set the farm animal figurines at the corners of the mat to introduce the farm theme.
5. Gently roll the soft soccer ball toward the infant, narrating the movement by saying, "The ball is rolling near you."
6. Encourage the infant to reach out or bat at the ball as it enters their immediate reach.
7. Move the ball to different sides of the infant to encourage them to turn their head and track the object.
8. Use a calm, encouraging voice to describe the ball as it moves across the field.
9. Allow the infant to touch the texture of the ball and the felt mat to build sensory awareness.
10. Conclude the activity by placing the ball and animals into the basket together to model cleaning up.
Educator Tip
Infants have very short attention spans, so keep the session under five minutes. If an infant becomes overstimulated or loses interest, transition immediately to a quiet cuddle or a different sensory experience.
Assessment
- Observe if the infant follows the path of the ball with their eyes.
- Note if the infant reaches toward the ball during the rolling motion.
- Record the infant's physical response to the teacher's verbal cues regarding distance.
Educator tip
Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
