Soccer Field Measurement (Farm Maths)
Supports agricultural awareness, STEM integration, literacy, and social-emotional development at the Toddler stage.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS At the Farm
- Learning area: Mathematics
- Level: EYFS 2-3
Objectives
- Developmentally appropriate objectives aligned to Toddler for Soccer Field Measurement (Farm Maths).
Materials
- Level-appropriate farm-themed materials and manipulatives.
Instructions
Materials
- Masking tape or painter tape
- Soft foam soccer balls
- Farm animal figurines
- Measuring tape or large wooden blocks
- Cardboard cutouts of farm gates
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate awareness of spatial concepts like near and far.
- Engage in physical movement to explore distance.
- Practise counting aloud with teacher support.
- Develop fine and gross motor skills through ball handling.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Create a small soccer field on the classroom floor using masking tape to define the boundaries.
2. Place a farm gate cutout at one end of the field to serve as the goal.
3. Gather the children in a circle and introduce the foam soccer ball, allowing them to touch and roll it.
4. Model how to push the ball toward the goal using hands or feet.
5. Encourage each child to take a turn pushing the ball from a short distance.
6. Use wooden blocks to measure the distance between the child and the goal, counting the blocks aloud as you place them.
7. Place farm animal figurines near the goal to encourage the children to kick or push the ball toward the animals.
8. Celebrate each successful goal with positive reinforcement and simple cheers.
9. Keep the activity brief to match the short attention spans of toddlers.
10. Transition to a new activity by having the children help gather the balls and animals.
Educator Tip
Toddlers often focus more on the sensory experience of the ball than the goal itself. If children lose interest in the measurement aspect, pivot to simply rolling the ball back and forth to build social interaction and turn taking.
Assessment
- Observe if the child attempts to move the ball toward the designated goal area.
- Note if the child responds to simple counting cues during the measurement process.
- Record the child ability to follow basic directions during the turn taking sequence.
Educator tip
Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.
Assessment
Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
