Instructions

Materials

- Masking tape or painter tape for marking lines

- Measuring tapes and trundle wheels

- Clipboards with paper and pencils

- Large farm animal figurines

- Measuring cubes or non-standard units like wooden blocks

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate the ability to measure length using both standard and non-standard units.

- Compare and order measurements from shortest to longest.

- Record numerical data accurately on a simple chart.

- Collaborate with peers to solve spatial problems on a designated surface.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Define a rectangular area on the classroom floor using masking tape to represent a farm soccer field.

2. Gather the children and explain that the farm animals need a soccer field to exercise, but the dimensions must be precise.

3. Demonstrate how to use a measuring tape to find the length and width of the taped area.

4. Model how to record these measurements on the clipboard, emphasizing the importance of writing down the numbers clearly.

5. Divide the children into small groups and assign each group one side of the field to measure.

6. Instruct groups to measure their assigned side using both standard measuring tapes and non-standard units like wooden blocks.

7. Ask the children to compare the results of the two different measurement methods and discuss why the numbers might be different.

8. Have the children place farm animal figurines along the perimeter to mark the boundaries they just measured.

9. Facilitate a group discussion where each team shares their findings to determine if the field is a perfect rectangle.

10. Conclude by having the children walk the perimeter of the field to physically experience the distance they measured.

Educator Tip

If children struggle with standard units, focus first on non-standard units to build confidence in the concept of length. To extend the activity for advanced learners, ask them to calculate the total perimeter by adding all four sides together.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can correctly align the zero mark of the measuring tool with the start of the line.

- Check the child's ability to record a number that corresponds to their physical measurement.

- Note whether the child can explain the difference between using a standard tool versus a non-standard unit.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
