Farm Songs & Rhythm
Supports agricultural awareness, STEM integration, literacy, and social-emotional development at the IPC Level 1 stage.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS At the Farm
- Learning area: Creative Arts
- Level: EYFS 3-4
Objectives
- Developmentally appropriate objectives aligned to IPC Level 1 for Farm Songs & Rhythm.
Materials
- Level-appropriate farm-themed materials and manipulatives.
Instructions
Materials
- A collection of farm animal puppets or laminated picture cards.
- Rhythm sticks or wooden spoons for each child.
- A portable speaker or audio player.
- A basket to hold the animal props.
- A clear, open floor space for movement.
Learning Objectives
- Children will identify at least three farm animals by their distinct sounds.
- Children will demonstrate the ability to keep a steady beat using rhythm sticks.
- Children will practise gross motor coordination by moving to the tempo of the music.
- Children will participate in group turn-taking during the song selection process.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle on the floor and introduce the rhythm sticks as tools for making music.
2. Model how to tap the sticks together gently to create a steady beat.
3. Play a familiar farm-themed song and encourage the children to tap along with the rhythm.
4. Pause the music and pull one animal puppet or card from the basket.
5. Ask the group to identify the animal and mimic its sound together.
6. Resume the music and ask the children to move around the room like that specific animal while keeping their rhythm sticks held high.
7. Repeat this process for three or four different animals to maintain engagement.
8. Transition to a slower tempo to help the children calm their bodies before moving to the next activity.
9. Collect the rhythm sticks one by one as the children return to the circle.
Educator Tip
If children struggle to keep a steady beat, focus on tapping the floor instead of the sticks together, as this provides better sensory feedback. You can differentiate this activity by asking more advanced students to lead the group in choosing the next animal or the speed of the rhythm.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly match the animal sound to the visual prompt.
- Note whether the child maintains a consistent rhythm during the musical segments.
- Record the child ability to stop movement and listen when the music pauses.
Educator tip
Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
