Instructions

Materials

- One soft, plush toy shaped like a farm animal (e.g., a cow or pig).

- A portable music player or a bell.

- A set of laminated farm animal flashcards.

- A small basket for storage.

Learning Objectives

- Identify and name at least three common farm animals.

- Demonstrate turn-taking skills during a group activity.

- Practise listening for auditory cues to start and stop movement.

- Improve fine motor coordination by passing an object to a peer.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle on the rug to create a focused group space.

2. Show the children the plush farm animal and lead a brief discussion about the sounds that animal makes.

3. Explain the rules of the game: the plush toy is a farm animal that needs to visit everyone in the circle.

4. Demonstrate how to pass the toy gently to the person sitting on the right.

5. Start the music or ring the bell to signal the start of the game.

6. Instruct the children to pass the animal quickly but carefully while the music plays.

7. Stop the music suddenly. The child holding the animal must name the animal or mimic its sound.

8. Encourage the rest of the group to repeat the name or sound together to reinforce vocabulary.

9. Restart the music and continue until every child has had a turn to hold the animal.

10. Conclude by placing the animal back in the basket and transitioning to the next activity.

Educator Tip

If a child struggles to identify the animal, hold up a flashcard as a visual prompt. This provides the necessary scaffolding for children who are still building their expressive vocabulary. You can also vary the pace of the music to keep the children engaged and attentive to the auditory cues.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can correctly name the animal when the music stops.

- Note whether the child waits for their turn to receive the toy from a peer.

- Record if the child follows the instruction to stop passing when the music ends.

Educator tip

Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
