- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Developmentally appropriate objectives aligned to IPC Level 3 for Hot Potato (Farm Vocabulary).
Materials
- Level-appropriate farm-themed materials and manipulatives.
Instructions
Materials
- One soft, plush toy shaped like a farm animal, such as a cow or pig.
- A portable music player or digital device with a speaker.
- A set of farm-themed vocabulary cards featuring images and text.
- A circular rug or floor space marked with tape for seating.
Learning Objectives
- Students will demonstrate active listening by starting and stopping movement in response to audio cues.
- Students will identify and orally produce at least five specific farm-related vocabulary words.
- Students will practise turn-taking and cooperative play within a structured group setting.
- Students will categorize farm animals based on physical characteristics or sounds during the discussion phase.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle on the rug and display the vocabulary cards to introduce the farm theme.
2. Review each card together, asking students to repeat the word and mimic the corresponding animal sound.
3. Explain that the plush animal is a hot potato that must be passed quickly around the circle.
4. Start the music and instruct the children to pass the plush toy to the person on their right.
5. Stop the music abruptly and instruct the child holding the toy to select one vocabulary card from the pile.
6. Ask the child to name the animal on the card and describe one feature, such as its colour or the sound it makes.
7. Encourage the rest of the group to repeat the word and the sound together to reinforce the learning.
8. Restart the music and continue the game until every child has had at least one turn to identify a card.
9. Conclude the activity by placing the cards in the classroom library area for independent exploration.
Educator Tip
If a student struggles with vocabulary recall, provide a scaffold by offering the first sound of the word or pointing to a visual clue on the card. To extend the activity for more advanced learners, ask them to use the vocabulary word in a full sentence, such as "The cow eats grass in the field."
Assessment
- Observe the child's ability to recall and correctly pronounce farm vocabulary words during their turn.
- Note if the child can follow the group rule of passing the item only when the music is playing.
- Record whether the child can successfully identify the animal on the card without teacher assistance.
Educator tip
Guided questioning to encourage language, reasoning, and participation. Differentiate for ability levels; incorporate sensory supports; ensure safety.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observation checklist or rubric aligned to developmental stage.
