- Large outline map of South Africa printed on cardstock
- Pre-cut shapes of the South African flag colours (red, blue, green, yellow, black, and white)
- Non-toxic glue sticks
- A globe or world map for reference
- Photographs of South African landscapes or animals
- Tray for organising collage materials
Learning Objectives
- Identify the shape of a country on a map.
- Recognise the six colours present in the South African flag.
- Develop fine motor skills through gluing and placing shapes.
- Participate in a group discussion about a new location.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather students in a circle and show them the globe. Point to the continent of Africa and then specifically to South Africa.
2. Share two or three photographs of South Africa, such as a picture of a savanna or a local animal, to build interest.
3. Display the South African flag and name the colours aloud. Ask students to point to a colour they recognise.
4. Distribute the cardstock maps and the pre-cut coloured shapes to each child.
5. Model how to apply glue to the back of a paper shape and press it onto the map.
6. Encourage children to fill in their maps using the flag colours, emphasizing the process rather than perfect placement.
7. Circulate around the room to assist children with glue application and to ask questions about the colours they are choosing.
8. Allow the maps to dry on a flat surface before hanging them on the classroom wall.
Educator Tip
To support children who struggle with fine motor control, provide larger shapes that are easier to grasp. If a child becomes frustrated with the flag design, allow them to decorate their map freely with the provided colours to ensure they remain engaged with the concept of the country.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly identify at least three colours from the flag.
- Note the child's ability to follow the multi-step instruction of applying glue and placing a shape.
- Listen for the child using the term South Africa during the activity.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
