South Africa Mapping & Flag
Level 2 deepens inquiry and comparative thinking. 'South Africa Mapping & Flag' promotes appreciation of diversity and global citizenship.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Geography
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Explain cultural features
- Record findings
- Collaborate in group tasks
Instructions
Materials
- Printed outline maps of South Africa.
- Pre-cut shapes representing the six colours of the South African flag.
- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors.
- A large globe or world map.
- Crayons or markers.
- A reference image of the South African flag.
Learning Objectives
- Identify South Africa as a country located on the continent of Africa.
- Recognise the unique V-shape design of the South African flag.
- Develop fine motor skills through cutting and pasting geometric shapes.
- Practise following multi-step spatial instructions.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and show them the globe. Point to the continent of Africa and locate South Africa at the southern tip.
2. Display the reference image of the South African flag and discuss the six colours. Ask the children to count the colours aloud.
3. Distribute the printed map outlines and have the children colour the landmass of South Africa using a single colour to distinguish it from the surrounding ocean.
4. Provide each child with the pre-cut flag shapes. Demonstrate how to arrange the pieces to form the V-shape pattern before applying glue.
5. Guide the children to glue the shapes onto a separate piece of paper or the corner of their map to create their own flag.
6. Encourage the children to describe the shapes they are using, such as triangles or rectangles.
7. Assist children who need help with the spatial orientation of the V-shape.
8. Allow the glue to dry and display the completed maps and flags on the classroom wall to create a collective map of the world.
Educator Tip
To support children who struggle with spatial planning, provide a light pencil outline on their paper where the flag pieces should be placed. This acts as a scaffold for their fine motor work. If a child finishes early, encourage them to draw animals native to South Africa, such as lions or elephants, on their map.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly identify the location of South Africa on the globe.
- Note the child's ability to replicate the flag pattern using the provided shapes.
- Document the child's participation in the group discussion regarding the colours and geography of the country.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe explanation quality, cooperation, accuracy.
