Rhythmic Ribbons

Infants build neural foundations through sensory pairing and repetition. 'Rhythmic Ribbons' introduces global diversity in developmentally appropriate way.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Lightweight silk scarves or satin ribbons attached to wooden rings.

- A portable speaker with soft, rhythmic world music.

- Soft floor mats or a clean rug for tummy time.

- A variety of small, safe rattles or shakers.

- A mirror mounted at floor level.

Learning Objectives

- Track moving objects visually with smooth eye movements.

- Respond to auditory stimuli by turning the head or changing activity level.

- Engage in purposeful reaching and grasping movements.

- Develop core strength through supported tummy time or assisted sitting.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Clear a safe, carpeted area and place infants on their backs or bellies depending on their current comfort level.

2. Play a selection of gentle, rhythmic music from different cultures to create a calm, auditory environment.

3. Hold a silk ribbon or scarf by the ring and gently wave it in the air above the infants.

4. Move the ribbon slowly from left to right to encourage the infants to track the movement with their eyes.

5. Lower the ribbon so it lightly brushes the infants hands or feet, allowing them to experience the texture.

6. Encourage infants who are sitting with support to reach out and grasp the wooden ring attached to the ribbon.

7. Use a mirror to show the infants their own movements as they wave the ribbons, helping them connect their actions to the visual result.

8. Keep the session brief, lasting no more than 10 minutes, to prevent overstimulation.

9. Observe each infant for signs of fatigue, such as rubbing eyes or turning away, and conclude the activity if these occur.

Educator Tip

If an infant seems uninterested in the ribbons, try changing the colour or the speed of your movements to recapture their attention. Always ensure the ribbons are securely fastened to the rings to prevent any choking hazards during exploration.

Assessment

- Observe if the infant follows the ribbon with their eyes as it moves across their field of vision.

- Note whether the infant reaches toward the ribbon when it is placed within their grasp.

- Record if the infant shows a change in body movement or vocalization in response to the musical rhythm.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gaze tracking, reaching, emotional regulation.
