Level 2 deepens inquiry and comparative thinking. 'Spanish Counting' promotes appreciation of diversity and global citizenship.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Around the World
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Explain cultural features
- Record findings
- Collaborate in group tasks
Instructions
Materials
- Ten small plastic maracas or rhythm sticks.
- Number cards labelled 1 through 10 in Spanish.
- A large felt board or magnetic surface.
- Ten colorful felt shapes or magnets.
- A small basket for sorting materials.
Learning Objectives
- Recognise and recite numbers 1 through 10 in Spanish.
- Demonstrate one-to-one correspondence by counting objects while speaking the Spanish number words.
- Match a Spanish number word to the corresponding quantity of objects.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and introduce the Spanish words for numbers 1 through 5. Model the pronunciation clearly while holding up the corresponding number of fingers.
2. Invite the children to repeat each number word after you, focusing on the rhythm of the syllables.
3. Place the felt board in the centre of the circle and display the number cards 1 through 5.
4. Select a volunteer to choose a number card. Ask the group to help the volunteer count out that many felt shapes to place on the board.
5. Lead the group in counting the shapes aloud in Spanish as they are placed on the board.
6. Once the group is comfortable with 1 through 5, introduce numbers 6 through 10 using the same method.
7. Distribute the maracas to the children. Call out a number in Spanish and have the children shake their maracas that many times.
8. Encourage children to work in pairs, where one student holds up a number card and the other counts out the correct number of rhythm sticks.
9. Circulate around the room to provide support with pronunciation and counting accuracy.
10. Conclude the activity by having the entire group count from 1 to 10 in Spanish while tapping their knees.
Educator Tip
To differentiate for advanced learners, ask them to count backward from 10 to 1 in Spanish. If a student struggles with the pronunciation, focus on the first three numbers until they gain confidence before introducing higher values.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can correctly match the quantity of objects to the spoken Spanish number word.
- Record whether the child can independently sequence the numbers 1 through 10 in the correct order.
- Note the child's ability to participate in the group counting rhythm without significant hesitation.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe explanation quality, cooperation, accuracy.
