Insect Life Cycles — Complete and Incomplete Metamorphosis
Insects metamorphose — most completely (4 stages), some incompletely (3 stages). A caterpillar in a chrysalis is the control — it will emerge a butterfly. Indirect aim: biology, evolution, connection to Great Lesson 2.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Zoology
- Level: Ages 6-8
Objectives
- Identify complete metamorphosis (egg→larva→pupa→adult): butterfly, beetle
- Identify incomplete (egg→nymph→adult): grasshopper, dragonfly
- Observe a real insect cycle
- Connect to Great Lesson 2
Materials
- Life cycle cards (butterfly, beetle, grasshopper)
- Live insect rearing kit if possible
- Specimens
- Journal
Instructions
1. Order butterfly life cycle cards: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly. 2. This is complete metamorphosis. 3. Grasshopper: egg, nymph (looks like small adult), adult. Incomplete. 4. Rear real caterpillars if possible. 5. Compare beetles (complete) to crickets (incomplete). 6. Connect to Second Great Lesson. 7. Research one insect deeply. 8. File.
