The Water Cycle
Water cycles endlessly. Sun heats water; it evaporates; rises; condenses; falls. The jar model is the control — same process, classroom scale. Indirect aim: meteorology, ecology, climate awareness.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Physical Science
- Level: Ages 6-8
Objectives
- Identify the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection
- Observe evaporation and condensation
- Model the cycle in a jar
- Connect to weather
Materials
- Water cycle diagram
- Clear jar with water, sealed with plastic
- Heat source (sunlight)
- Weather observation journal
Instructions
1. Pour water in jar, seal with plastic. Place in sunlight. 2. Observe: water evaporates, condenses on top, drips down — precipitation! 3. Cycle diagram: ocean → evaporation → cloud → rain → river → ocean. 4. Same water since Earth began — even dinosaurs' water is now ours. 5. Observe real weather. 6. Research local watershed. 7. Study water conservation. 8. File.
Educator tip
'The water you drink is dinosaur pee' — children remember this forever.
Assessment
Observe cycle understanding, model accuracy, and weather connection.
