The Rock Cycle — Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic
Rocks transform. Lava cools → igneous. Weathered + compacted → sedimentary. Heat + pressure → metamorphic. All rocks can become any type. Indirect aim: geology, deep time, preparation for Earth science.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Physical Science
- Level: Ages 7-9
Objectives
- Identify three rock types: igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic
- Understand how rocks transform over time
- Collect and classify local rocks
- Research tectonic forces
Materials
- Rock specimens of each type
- Rock cycle diagram
- Magnifying glass
- Local rock collection container
Instructions
1. Examine granite (igneous), sandstone (sedimentary), marble (metamorphic). 2. Describe each by texture. 3. The cycle: igneous weathered → sediment → sedimentary → buried → metamorphic → melted → igneous again. 4. Research local geology. 5. Collect rocks; classify. 6. Connect to Second Great Lesson's Earth formation. 7. Research volcanoes and tectonics. 8. File.
Educator tip
The rock cycle shows the Earth is alive — slow, but moving. Connect to deep geological time.
Assessment
Observe classification, cycle understanding, and collection engagement.
