Elements and the Periodic Table — Introduction
Elements are the alphabet of matter. Mendeleev's periodic table is one of humanity's great intellectual achievements. Indirect aim: chemistry, the atomic theory, preparation for secondary science.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Physical Science
- Level: Ages 9-11
Objectives
- Understand element as fundamental building block
- Navigate the periodic table by number and group
- Identify metals, nonmetals, metalloids
- Research one element in depth
Materials
- Periodic table poster
- Element sample kit (safe samples like carbon, copper, iron, aluminum)
- Element cards
- Mendeleev biography
Instructions
1. Tell Mendeleev's story — he organized elements by properties, predicted unknown ones. 2. Identify atomic number, symbol, name for H, He, C, O, N, Fe, Cu. 3. Classify: metals (left), nonmetals (right), metalloids (staircase). 4. Find element of choice — your birthstone's metal, or the element you want to study. 5. Research its history, uses, properties. 6. Draw Bohr model of its atom. 7. Write report. 8. Share at class.
Educator tip
The periodic table IS a poem of matter. Children who meet it early become fluent in chemical thinking.
Assessment
Observe navigation of the table, classification, and depth of element research.
