- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Zoology
- Level: Ages 4-6

- Learn characteristics of each group
- Build scientific classification skills
- Develop comparative thinking
Materials
- Animal picture cards (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish)
- Classification chart
- Sorting mat with group labels
- Miniature animal figurines
Instructions
1. 'Animals with backbones are called vertebrates.' 2. Present five groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish. 3. Discuss key characteristics of each (fur/hair, feathers, scales, moist skin, fins/gills). 4. Sort animal cards into groups. 5. Check with control chart. 6. Discuss: 'Why does a whale go with mammals, not fish?'
Educator tip
Start with obvious examples before tricky ones (whale, penguin, salamander). The discussion about 'tricky animals' is very engaging.
