Instructions
Create a challenging (but achievable) obstacle course with stations that require effort: balance beams, climbing structures, hopping sequences, crawling tunnels, strength challenges.
Introduce perseverance: 'Perseverance means keeping going even when something is hard. When your body says 'This is tough!' your brain says 'Keep trying!' Today we're going to practice perseverance!'
Set expectations: 'Some of this will be challenging. That's on purpose! When it feels hard, that's when perseverance kicks in. What can you say to yourself when something is difficult?' Generate self-talk phrases: 'I can do this!' 'Keep trying!' 'Almost there!'
Have children attempt the course, encouraging perseverance at each station. When children struggle: 'This is your perseverance moment! You can do it! Keep going!'
Build in peer encouragement: children who aren't currently on the course cheer for those who are. Teach specific encouragement phrases: 'You've got this!' 'Don't give up!' 'Almost there!'
After the course, reflect: 'Where did you have to use perseverance? What did you say to yourself? How did it feel to keep going when it was hard?'
Educator tip
Calibrate challenge level—too easy doesn't require perseverance; too hard leads to giving up. Aim for 'challenging but achievable with effort' and adjust for different children as needed.
Assessment
Observe perseverance behaviors, self-talk during challenges, peer encouragement, and reflection on persistence.
