Instructions
Introduce the project by showing examples of sports or game trading cards: 'See how each card features a player and their special abilities? We're going to create Character Trait Trading Cards—each card will feature an important character trait and show how it looks in action!'
Brainstorm character traits together: courage, kindness, honesty, perseverance, respect, responsibility, empathy, fairness, generosity, patience. Discuss what each means and how they appear in daily life.
Distribute trading card templates. Each card should include: the trait name prominently displayed, a definition in child-friendly language, an illustration showing the trait in action, examples of when to use the trait, and a 'power level' or 'strength rating.'
Circulate as children create, helping them think deeply about their chosen trait: 'What does courage look like at school? At home? What are three things a courageous person might do?' This conversation deepens understanding beyond surface definitions.
When cards are complete, facilitate trading so each child builds a collection of different traits. Hold card-sharing sessions where children present their creations.
Create a classroom display of the complete collection: 'Look at all the character traits we want to collect in our own lives!'
Educator tip
Encourage children to create cards for traits they want to develop in themselves, not just traits they already have. This aspirational approach builds growth mindset around character.
Assessment
Evaluate depth of trait definitions, creative representation, and ability to connect traits to specific behaviors.
