Instructions
Introduce the Kindness Chain Challenge with enthusiasm: 'For the next week, we're going to fill our classroom with kindness! Every time someone does something kind, we'll add a link to our chain. Let's see how long we can make it!'
Define kindness with examples: helping someone pick up dropped items, sharing toys, saying nice words, including someone in play, comforting someone who's sad. Ask children to contribute their own examples.
Demonstrate the chain-making process: when someone performs a kind act, they (or a friend who witnessed it) comes to the kindness station, draws or writes what happened on a paper strip, and adds it to the chain.
Throughout the day, actively look for kindness: 'I just saw Maya share her crayons with Jordan. Maya, would you like to add a link to our kindness chain?' This public recognition encourages more kind acts.
Hold daily kindness circles where children share kind acts they did or received. Read some of the chain links aloud. Measure the chain's growth and celebrate milestones: 'Our kindness chain reached the window today!'
At week's end, display the complete chain prominently. Discuss: 'Look at all this kindness! Each small act added up to something huge!'
Educator tip
Watch for children who aren't getting recognition and find genuine ways to celebrate their contributions. Some children show kindness quietly and need adult eyes to notice and honor their efforts.
Assessment
Track frequency of kind acts, quality of kindness descriptions on chain links, and participation in kindness discussions.
