Helping Hands Garden
The helping hands metaphor makes the abstract concept of helpfulness concrete while creating a beautiful, collaborative display that celebrates community contribution.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Champions of Character
- Learning area: Science
- Level: Level 1
Objectives
- Trace and cut out hand shapes
- Identify ways they can help at school and home
- Create a collaborative 'helping hands' garden display
Materials
- Construction paper (various colors)
- Scissors
- Markers
- Green paper for stems
- Large display space
Instructions
Begin with a discussion about helping: 'Our hands can do so many helpful things! What are some ways you use your hands to help at school? At home?' Brainstorm and create an anchor chart of helping actions: picking up toys, setting the table, carrying books, comforting a friend, opening doors, cleaning up spills.
Demonstrate the hand tracing and cutting process. Distribute colorful paper and support children in creating their hand shapes—adults may need to assist with tracing for some children.
On each hand, have children write or dictate one way they help. Some children may want to create multiple hands for multiple helping actions. Encourage variety: 'Think of a way you help that no one else has said yet!'
Create the garden display together. Use green paper to create stems and arrange the hand 'flowers' blooming from them. Add a title: 'Our Helping Hands Garden—Watch Us Grow!'
Throughout the year, add new hands as children demonstrate new helping behaviors: 'Sophia helped our new student find the bathroom. Let's add a new flower to our garden!'
Educator tip
Focus on helping as something we CHOOSE to do rather than just following rules. 'You CHOSE to help—that makes you a Champion of Character!' This builds intrinsic motivation.
Assessment
Evaluate fine motor skills in tracing and cutting, quality of helping ideas generated, and connection to personal helping behaviors.
