Affirming children's uniqueness through VIP recognition fosters self-confidence, public speaking skills, and appreciation for each individual's special qualities.

Instructions

Establish the VIP routine as a regular classroom tradition. Each day, one child is designated as the Very Important Person. Create ceremony around this: a special badge or crown, a 'throne' chair at the front, perhaps a microphone prop.

Introduce the VIP: '[Child's name] is our VIP today! That means they're going to share something special about themselves, and we're all going to listen with our best Champion listening ears.'

Guide the VIP through sharing: 'You can tell us about your favorite thing to do, show us something you brought from home, or tell us about someone you love!' Offer prompts if the child is shy: 'What's your favorite color? Do you have a pet?'

After the VIP shares, facilitate compliment-giving: 'Who has something kind to say about our VIP?' Model appropriate compliments: 'I like how Marcus always helps clean up. I like playing with Marcus at recess.' Guide children away from appearance-based compliments toward character and action-based ones.

Close with applause and formal presentation of the VIP badge or crown to wear throughout the day.

Educator tip

Rotate VIP roles systematically to ensure every child is included. Some children may need advance notice so they can prepare what to share. For very shy children, allow them to bring a comfort object or have a friend stand beside them.

Assessment

Observe confidence in speaking to the group, communication clarity, listening behavior from classmates, and quality of compliments given.
