I Can Stack... How Many?
Stacking challenges reinforce counting, size comparison, and most importantly, the persistence that comes from trying, failing, and trying again.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Champions of Character
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: Infant & Toddler
Objectives
- Build and count stacked blocks, developing persistence and counting skills
Materials
- Foam or plastic blocks
- Paper
- Markers
- Timer (optional)
Instructions
Set up stacking stations with blocks of various sizes. Gather children and introduce the challenge: 'Today we're going to be block stackers! We'll see how high we can build and count how many blocks we use. But here's the thing—sometimes our towers might fall down. That's okay! Champions keep trying!'
Model stacking while counting: 'One block, two blocks, three blocks... Uh oh, it wobbled! I'm going to try again carefully... three blocks, four blocks...' When your tower eventually falls, model resilience: 'It fell! That's okay—now I know I can get to four. Let me try to beat that!'
Release children to individual stacking. Set a timer for building rounds if desired. Circulate and engage: 'How many blocks do you have? Let's count together!' When towers fall, encourage persistence: 'You got to five that time! Can you try for six?'
Record children's counts on paper—they can draw their towers and write the number. Create a class chart showing everyone's highest counts.
Conclude by celebrating both high numbers AND persistence: 'Some of us stacked really high! And ALL of us kept trying even when towers fell. That's what Champions of Character do!'
Educator tip
The character education focus here is persistence. Celebrate children who rebuild many times as much as those who build the highest towers. 'Look how many times you tried! That takes real determination!'
Assessment
Monitor counting accuracy, problem-solving approaches when towers fall, persistence through challenges, and fine motor control.
