Sand Box Painting

Level 2 deepens scientific observation.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large plastic sandbox or designated sand area

- Spray bottles filled with water mixed with non-toxic food coloring

- Small plastic rakes and shovels

- Stencils made from heavy cardstock

- Laminated shape cards for reference

- Clipboards and pencils for recording observations

Learning Objectives

- Demonstrate control of hand muscles by manipulating spray triggers.

- Observe and describe how liquid interacts with dry versus damp sand.

- Create intentional patterns or shapes using tools and colored water.

- Explain the difference between physical changes in sand texture.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the sandbox by smoothing the surface to create a flat canvas.

2. Gather the children and explain that they will use colored water to paint on the sand.

3. Demonstrate how to hold the spray bottle and squeeze the trigger to create fine mist or concentrated droplets.

4. Encourage children to place stencils on the sand before spraying to see how the color outlines a shape.

5. Ask children to experiment with spraying from different heights to observe how the size of the color spots changes.

6. Invite children to use rakes to drag the colored sand and create swirled patterns.

7. Prompt children to touch the sand and describe how the water changes the texture from loose to moldable.

8. Have children draw their favorite patterns on their clipboards to document their work.

9. Allow time for the sun to dry the sand, then observe how the colors fade or change as the moisture evaporates.

10. Guide a brief group discussion on why the sand absorbed the water differently in various spots.

Educator Tip

If children struggle with the trigger mechanism, use squeeze bottles with pointed tips to allow for more control. To extend the activity, introduce salt or glitter to the sand to see how these additives react to the colored water.

Assessment

- Note if the child can successfully operate the spray bottle independently.

- Record the child's ability to describe the change in sand texture during the activity.

- Observe whether the child can replicate a specific shape using the provided stencils.

Assessment

Observe investigation, recording accuracy.
