Beautiful Butterfly (Symmetry Art)

Level 1 builds foundational seasonal and safety awareness through structured activity.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- White cardstock paper cut into large butterfly shapes

- Washable tempera paint in bright summer colors

- Small plastic spoons or squeeze bottles

- Wet wipes for quick hand cleaning

- A picture book about the life cycle of a butterfly

- Trays to contain the paint mess

Learning Objectives

- Identify the concept of symmetry by observing matching patterns on two sides.

- Use descriptive language to identify colors and shapes during the creative process.

- Demonstrate fine motor control by applying paint to one side of the paper.

- Sequence the stages of metamorphosis through a brief group discussion.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle to read a short story about how a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.

2. Ask the children to point to the wings of the butterfly in the book and note how the patterns look the same on both sides.

3. Place a butterfly-shaped cardstock on a tray for each child.

4. Fold the butterfly in half vertically to create a crease, then open it back up so it lies flat.

5. Instruct the children to place small dollops of paint on only one side of the crease.

6. Encourage the children to use the back of a spoon to spread the paint if they prefer not to use their fingers.

7. Guide the children to fold the paper along the crease again and press down firmly with their palms.

8. Have the children carefully unfold their papers to reveal the symmetrical print.

9. Allow the butterflies to dry on a flat surface while discussing the colors used.

Educator Tip

If a child struggles with the concept of symmetry, demonstrate the process using a smaller piece of paper first. This allows them to see the result quickly without the pressure of a larger surface. You can extend this activity by asking children to name the colors they see on their finished wings.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can successfully fold the paper to create a mirror image.

- Listen for the use of color names and descriptive words during the painting process.

- Note the child's ability to follow the multi-step sequence of applying paint and folding the paper.
