Respecting Personal Space
Understanding personal space teaches body awareness, consent, and respect for others' physical boundaries.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Grace & Courtesy
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Understand personal space boundaries
- Develop body awareness
- Build consent awareness
Materials
- Hula hoops (for visual demonstration)
- Open space for movement
Instructions
1. Stand inside a hula hoop: 'This is your personal bubble.' 2. Walk around—if bubbles touch, you're too close. 3. Practice standing an arm's length apart. 4. Discuss: some people like to be close, others need more space. 5. Practice asking: 'Is it okay if I sit here?' 6. Practice saying: 'I need a little more space, please.'
Educator tip
Use the hula hoop visual for younger children. Respect different cultural norms about personal space. Teach that consent applies to touching too.
Assessment
Child maintains appropriate personal space and asks before entering others' space.
