Prefix Exploration: Un-, Re-, Pre-
Prefix knowledge multiplies vocabulary exponentially. Learning un- alone unlocks hundreds of words: unhappy, unkind, unable, unfair, etc.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Word Study
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Understand how prefixes change word meaning
- Read words with common prefixes
- Build vocabulary through morphology
- Develop structural analysis skills
Materials
- Prefix cards (un-, re-, pre-, dis-, mis-)
- Base word cards
- Prefix + base word combination strips
- Definition matching cards
Instructions
1. Present: 'happy.' 2. Add prefix card 'un-': 'unhappy.' 3. 'What happened to the meaning?' 4. Un- means NOT: unhappy = not happy. 5. Practice with other un- words. 6. Introduce re- (again): redo, rewrite, replay. 7. Build and define prefix words. 8. Hunt for prefix words in reading.
Educator tip
Help children see prefixes as 'word math': un + happy = unhappy. This analytical approach transfers to all morphological learning.
Assessment
Child identifies prefixes, separates them from base words, and explains how they change meaning.
