Moveable Alphabet: Sentence Construction
The moveable alphabet allows children to compose sentences before their handwriting is fluent enough for extended writing—separating composition from transcription.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Writing
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Compose sentences before handwriting is fluent
- Apply phonetic knowledge
- Develop creative expression
- Build spelling awareness
Materials
- Large moveable alphabet
- Pictures for sentence prompts
- Finger spacers (for word gaps)
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Present picture prompt. 2. Child says sentence about picture. 3. 'Let's write it with the moveable alphabet.' 4. Child selects letters for first word. 5. Place finger spacer. 6. Build next word. 7. Read completed sentence. 8. Check: does it make sense? Does it match what you said?
Educator tip
Don't correct spelling at this stage—the goal is composition and encoding. Spelling precision comes later with reading development.
