Moveable Alphabet: Encoding Words
The Moveable Alphabet allows children to write—encode their thoughts—before they have handwriting fluency. This separates the cognitive work of spelling from the motor work of writing.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Writing
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Encode words before handwriting fluency
- Connect sounds to symbols for spelling
- Build confidence in written expression
- Develop phonetic spelling skills
Materials
- Moveable Alphabet: wooden or plastic letters in compartmentalized box
- Consonants in red/pink, vowels in blue
- Small mat for building words
- Objects or pictures for spelling
Instructions
1. Child chooses or is given word to spell (e.g., 'cat'). 2. Sound out word: '/k/ - /a/ - /t/'. 3. Find letter for first sound, place on mat. 4. Find letter for second sound, place next to first. 5. Continue until word is complete. 6. Read the word back. 7. Progress to phrases and sentences.
Educator tip
Accept phonetic spelling—children write what they hear. 'Luv' for 'love' shows correct phonemic awareness.
Assessment
Child encodes CVC words independently using moveable letters.
