Pumpkin Roll and Chase
Chasing a rolling object provides powerful motivation for movement while developing visual tracking skills essential for later reading. The round shape of small pumpkins makes them roll unpredictably, adding excitement and requiring adaptive movement as children follow the changing path.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: Fall Festival
- Learning area: Physical Development
- Level: Infant & Toddler
Objectives
- Practice crawling or walking while tracking a moving object
- Develop visual tracking skills by following a rolling pumpkin
- Experience joyful movement through chasing play
Materials
- Small round pumpkins (not too heavy)
- Open floor space or gentle grassy slope outdoors
- Pillows or soft barriers to stop rolling pumpkins
- Basket to hold pumpkins between turns
Instructions
Select small, round pumpkins that roll well but are not too heavy for young children to push. Create a safe rolling space, either indoors on a smooth floor or outdoors on gentle grass.
With pre-mobile infants, roll the pumpkin slowly within their visual field. Move it from side to side to encourage head tracking: "Where is the pumpkin going? There it goes! Now it's coming back!" Bring it close enough for them to reach and touch.
With crawling infants, roll the pumpkin a short distance away and encourage them to chase it: "Get the pumpkin! You can reach it!" Celebrate when they catch up to it, regardless of how far they traveled.
With toddlers, roll the pumpkin farther and invite them to run after it. Add challenge by rolling toward a target: "Can you roll the pumpkin to the basket?" Let them practice pushing the pumpkin themselves, experiencing how force affects distance.
Create simple games: roll pumpkins toward each other, roll and count how many seconds until it stops, or roll toward a finish line.
End by collecting pumpkins together and placing them in a basket, making cleanup part of the joyful activity.
Educator tip
Test pumpkins before the activity to ensure they roll. Very flat-bottomed pumpkins may not roll well. Outdoor play on gentle slopes adds extra excitement as pumpkins roll farther.
Assessment
Document locomotor skill development, visual tracking abilities, and engagement with physical play.
