Fall Time Nursery Rhymes

Nursery rhymes are foundational to reading readiness. The rhythmic patterns train the ear to hear language segments, while the memorization builds verbal memory essential for holding sounds in mind during reading. The addition of finger plays and movements creates multi-sensory learning that reaches all types of learners.

Instructions

Create an inviting circle time atmosphere. Explain that you will learn songs that children have been singing for hundreds of years.

Begin with "Itsy Bitsy Spider," a classic that combines singing with finger movements:

"Itsy Bitsy spider climbing up the spout, (fingers climb upward)

Down came the rain and washed the spider out, (fingers rain down, then sweep outward)

Out came the sun and dried up all the rain, (arms form sun circle overhead)

Now Itsy Bitsy spider went up the spout again! (fingers climb upward again)"

Teach the movements slowly, then combine with the words. Repeat multiple times as children become more confident with both lyrics and motions.

Transition to "Jack and Jill":

"Jack and Jill went up the hill, (walking fingers upward)

To fetch a pail of water, (mime carrying bucket)

Jack fell down and broke his crown, (tumble motion)

And Jill came tumbling after. (roll hands over each other)"

Connect the rhymes to fall by discussing hills in autumn, spider webs glistening with morning dew, and wells in harvest fields. These connections make the traditional rhymes feel seasonally relevant.

Practice the rhymes throughout the day: during transitions, while waiting, before lunch. This repeated exposure builds fluency and enjoyment.

Educator tip

Traditional rhymes may need cultural context. Explain that crowns in nursery rhymes usually mean heads, not royal crowns. Be prepared to answer questions and provide reassurance about tumbling characters.

Assessment

Observe finger play coordination, song memorization, and willingness to participate in group singing.
