Sand Box Painting
Infants learn through tactile exploration.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Summer Time
- Learning area: Gross Motor
- Level: EYFS Birth-2
Objectives
- Explore sand textures safely.
Instructions
Materials
- Clean, shallow plastic bins filled with fine, sifted play sand
- Non-toxic, water-based tempera paint in primary colours
- Large, soft-bristled paint brushes and foam sponges
- Plastic spray bottles filled with water
- Waterproof floor mats or outdoor grass area
- Plastic trays for mixing small amounts of paint
Learning Objectives
- Explore the tactile properties of sand through touch and movement.
- Observe cause and effect by manipulating paint on a textured surface.
- Develop hand-eye coordination by grasping brushes or using fingers to mark the sand.
- Engage in sensory regulation through repetitive physical movements.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Set up the shallow bins on a stable, low surface or directly on a waterproof mat in the shade.
2. Smooth the surface of the sand in each bin to create a blank canvas.
3. Place a small amount of paint on a plastic tray nearby for easy access.
4. Position the infant in a supported seated position or on their tummy with supervision.
5. Model the activity by dipping a brush into the paint and dragging it across the sand to create a line.
6. Encourage the infant to reach out and touch the sand, allowing them to feel the texture and the wetness of the paint.
7. Assist the infant in making handprints or finger marks if they show interest.
8. Use a spray bottle to lightly mist the sand, showing the infant how the texture changes when wet.
9. Allow the infant to explore the sand freely for five to ten minutes, as attention spans at this age are brief.
10. Gently wash the infant hands with a warm, damp cloth immediately following the activity.
Educator Tip
Some infants may be hesitant to touch the sand or paint. If this occurs, place a piece of clear plastic wrap over the sand before painting to allow for sensory exploration without direct skin contact. Always ensure the sand is food-grade or specifically labelled for play to keep the environment safe for mouthing behaviours.
Assessment
- Observe if the infant reaches toward the sand or paint independently.
- Note the infant reaction to the different textures of dry sand, wet sand, and paint.
- Record the duration of engagement and the level of physical participation during the session.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe sensory engagement.
