Sun Catchers & Letter S

Level 1 builds foundational literacy through seasonal activity.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Cardstock paper with large letter S outlines pre-cut into frames

- Clear contact paper

- Assorted colours of tissue paper squares

- Yarn or ribbon for hanging

- Scissors and hole punch

- Painter tape

Learning Objectives

- Identify the visual shape of the letter S.

- Demonstrate fine motor control by placing tissue paper onto a sticky surface.

- Associate the letter S with the theme of Summer.

- Practise following multi-step directions in a group setting.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather students in a circle and hold up a large letter S cutout. Ask students to trace the curve of the letter with their fingers while saying the sound of the letter together.

2. Introduce the theme of Summer by asking students what they see in the sky during the season. Guide the conversation toward the sun.

3. Explain that S is for Summer and S is for Sun.

4. Provide each student with a pre-cut cardstock frame of the letter S taped to the table with the sticky side of contact paper facing up.

5. Demonstrate how to pick up a small piece of tissue paper and press it firmly onto the sticky surface of the letter frame.

6. Encourage students to fill the entire frame with tissue paper to create a stained-glass effect.

7. Circulate the room to assist students who may have difficulty peeling the tissue paper or placing it within the boundaries.

8. Once finished, punch a hole at the top of the letter S and thread a piece of yarn through it.

9. Hang the completed sun catchers in a sunny window to observe how the light passes through the colours.

Educator Tip

If students struggle with the shape, provide a model letter S that is already partially filled to show the desired density of the tissue paper. To extend this activity for advanced learners, ask them to identify other summer words that start with the same sound, such as sand or sea.

Assessment

- Observe if the student can correctly identify the letter S when prompted.

- Note the student ability to manipulate small materials using a pincer grasp.

- Record whether the student successfully completes the letter shape within the provided frame.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: engagement, task completion, letter recognition.
