Cake Match

Letter recognition forms the foundation of reading readiness. When children engage with letters through games, they develop familiarity and automaticity that supports later decoding success. The cake theme connects literacy learning to the thematic unit while making alphabet practise enjoyable.

Instructions

Prepare materials in advance by creating cake bottom pieces and cake topper pieces, each featuring a single letter. Letters should be large and clearly printed. Laminating ensures durability across multiple uses.

Begin by singing the ABC song together as a class while pointing to each letter on a large alphabet poster. This activates prior knowledge and warms up letter recognition skills.

Explain the Cake Match game: each child will take a turn selecting a cake bottom from one basket, displaying it on the whiteboard using sticky tack, and then finding the matching cake topper from a second basket. When a match is made, the whole class says the letter together.

Model the game yourself first, thinking aloud as you work: "I pulled out a cake bottom with the letter B on it. Now I need to find a cake topper with the same letter. Let me look carefully. Here it is! B and B match! Everyone say B with me!"

Invite children to take turns playing while classmates watch and participate by repeating letters. Ensure every child has at least one turn. For larger classes, consider setting up multiple game stations with adult supervision.

Conclude by reviewing the completed cakes on the board, pointing to each and saying the letter together. Celebrate children's growing letter knowledge.

Educator tip

Focus on a subset of letters for younger children rather than overwhelming them with the entire alphabet. Prioritize letters from children's names, which have personal significance and are often first to be recognised.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Document each child's ability to recognise and name letters. Note which letters are secure and which need additional practice. Observe children's ability to follow game rules and take turns appropriately.
